Q: What Is Conscious Sedation?

When people think of sedation, they can think about the kind of stuff that knocks you out and makes you sleep. But what if Dr. Cornell needs to ask you a question? How can we make sure things are going well for you? That’s why our office focuses on conscious sedation. The point of sedation is to make you feel so relaxed and comfortable that you can easily handle procedures and treatments. Conscious sedation does just that, but it allows you to stay awake so we can communicate during the treatment if necessary.

Q: What Types Of Sedation Do You Offer?

We offer two types of conscious sedation: nitrous oxide and oral medication.

  • Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas. You wear a small mask over your nose and inhale a mix of the gas and regular air. You’ll quickly feel relaxed and calm. Perhaps best of all, nitrous oxide wears off almost as soon as you take the mask off.
  • Oral medication are pills that you take before your appointment. They act similarly to nitrous oxide — you’ll feel relaxed and worry-free while staying awake — but they are a bit stronger. Because the effects can take time to wear off, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

Q: How Can Your Staff Help?

Sedation is not the only way to help you feel relaxed during your appointment. Dr. Cornell and our whole dental team have the people skills necessary to treat you with warmth and respect. Whereas some dental offices are full of people who don’t seem to care if you’re there or not, our team can help you relax during your visit by being friendly, professional, and soothing. Dr. Cornell is especially well known for his great chairside manner.

Q: How Comfortable Is Your Office?

For some people, the stress of going to see the dentist comes from images of uncomfortable offices. At Neil R. Cornell, DDS, we have built a dental office that takes your comfort into consideration. Our TVs and Wi-Fi can keep your mind occupied, and our blankets and neck pillows can help make sure you are comfy and warm.

Q: Can I Get A Longer Appointment To Relax More?

Some people need more time during their appointment so they don’t feel rushed and get stressed. If you need it, we can definitely offer a longer appointment for you. But we recognize your time is valuable, which is why we almost always run on time. And if for some odd reason we are running behind a little, Dr. Cornell will personally come out and explain. Although we are closed on Fridays, we can offer some appointments that day (regular or longer) if that can help.

Q: Will I Know What Will Happen In A Dental Treatment Beforehand?

Fear of the unknown is a powerful thing, but it’s easily defeated with knowledge and understanding. At our Tulsa, OK dental office, our entire team will thoroughly explain all of your treatment options and what those entail. We want you to be a partner in your dental care, which means we will describe exactly what your appointment will be like. This way, not only can you feel more confident by knowing what’s going on, but you can also make informed decisions.
